1. Check your PC for updates. Our systems are up to date because that keeps our systems safe from malicious activities. Our up-to-date systems want to talk to systems that are also up to date! Let’s go through how to check your updates.
    1. Windows

i. Left click the Start menu (four squares – Windows icon)

ii. Left click 'Settings'

iii. Select 'Update & Security'

iv. Select 'Check for updates' & 'View optional updates'

v. Optional Updates - Firmware (note that although it says these are optional updates, they are actually crucial and can cause communication issues if they are not kept up-to-date)

vi. Final Step - Wait until all updates have both downloaded and fully installed.

It is also very important to be sure your computer is plugged into its power source as well as leaving it alone while it completes the update during start up

a.    Do not close the lid

b.    Do not get impatient and try to hold the power button

c.    Do not restart before updates are all finished

d.    Always restart after updates

vii. After computer restart, repeat the above steps to check if any additional updates (or optional updates) became available after the first round of updates - you may need to download/install these additional updates and do another restart to get your computer fully up to date.

ll. Mac

  1. Update macOS on Mac

Use Software Update to update or upgrade macOS, including built-in apps like Safari.

Before you get started, it's a good idea to back up your Mac. Then follow these steps to find and install any available software updates or upgrades.

    1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
    2. In the System Preferences window, click Software Update.
If your System Preferences doesn't include Software Update, learn how to upgrade to macOS Monterey or upgrade to an older macOS, and use the Updates tab of the App Store app to get app updates.
    3. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now:
      • Update Now installs the latest updates for the currently installed version, such as an update from macOS Big Sur 11.5 to macOS Big Sur 11.6.
      • Upgrade Now installs a major new version with a new name, such as macOS Monterey. Software Update shows only upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.

When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then macOS and all of the apps it installs are up to date, including Safari, Messages, Mail, Music, Photos, FaceTime, and Calendar.

If you downloaded any apps from the App Store, use the App Store to get updates for those apps.
